Welcome to Technical and Business Writing on the Internet! I hope by now you feel somewhat comfortable accessing your course. If you are reading this lecture, you have already read the course syllabus and online orientation, so you should have a good idea about how this course will work.

As I explained in the online orientation material, during most weeks, under the Assignments link, I will post weekly assignments. In these assignments, I will refer you to other Homepage links. This posting of Week 2 Assignments is labeled this way because you will turn in these assignments during the second week of a 16-week semester.

PART B: Read Chapter 1, pages 1—27.

PART C: Complete the following activities, accessible from the Chapter 1 Course Content link from our Homepage.
1.1 Review Chapter 1 Learning Objectives.
1.2 View and listen to E-lecture.
1.3 Review and study Flashcards.

You are not required to send me your answers. I want you to see, on your own, how you score and then compare your answers.

PART G: Upload to the D2L dropbox folder your introductory essay.
One disadvantage in taking an Internet course is that getting to know one another is somewhat difficult. I would like for you to tell me a little about yourself. Word-process an Introductory Essay of about 350 – 450 words in length. In this essay you should cover the following topics:

Personal Information—Tell about yourself, your family, home, schools, jobs and hobbies.

Goals—Tell what your goals are for this course and for your work here at
Temple College. What skills do you hope to improve? Are you working on
a particular degree or certificate? Do you have plans to transfer?

Experiences—Tell about any positive or negative experiences you have had
with technical writing or with writing in general. What types of documents have you been required to prepare on the job?

Be sure you include any information you think I should know about you!

Structure your introductory essay so that you have at least 3 paragraphs, one covering each of the topics listed above. Use 12-point font size, Ariel font style, for this essay and all other assignments. Include a note at the end of your essay giving your word count.

Remember my advice about the completion of assignments: Don’t wait until the night before to begin any assignment.

BRING A BLUE SCAN SHEET FOR THE TEST.

1. You will have a test over all the chapters
in the Study Guide.
2. You should also be able to consturct a Senence
Definition according to the text.
3. In addition, you shold know the difference between
a graph and a chart. You should be able to recognize AND
identify exactly a table, a simple bar graph, a horizontal bar
graph, a deviation bar graph, a deviation line graph, a simple
line graph, a multiple line graph, a simple pie chart, an
exploded pie graph, an organizational chart, a flow chart
a Gantt chart, a graphic illustration (a diagram),
an exploded diagram, a cutaway diagram,a photograph, and
a pictogram. Look in the Index for exact pages.
All of these are illustrated in your text in Chapter 14.
When you identify these visuals, you MUST give the EXACT
NAME as stated in the text. In other words, don't say
"line graph" say "simple line graph" or "multiple line graph."
4. On page 271, you have the Guidelines for displaying (or
creating) a Pie Chart. ADD THESE GUIDELINES FOR THE PURPOSES
OF THIS TEST: 1.) Start at 12 0'clock going in order from the
largest percent to the smallest percent. 2.) Be sure to have a
title at the top of the chart and be sure that the title reflects
the items illustrated. 4.) If you have a source, identify the
source. 3.) No other rules will apply.
5. On page 265, you have the Guidelines for displaying (or
creatomg) a Bar Graph. ADD THESE GUIDELINES FOR THE PURPOSES OF
THIS TEST: 1.) Have a title that reflects the items illustrated.
2.) Start at zero on your verticle scale. 3.) Omit the Guideline
that says to have a tick mark. 4.) Be sure to have a constant ration
on both the verticle and the horizontal scales. 5.)If you have a source,
identify the source.
6. Know these Guidelines so that you can evaluate the visuals
that I will give you to see if they are deliberatly distorted,
as explained on pages 288-290 "Ethical Considerations."

1. On your test you will have sentences that
contain the errors that we have studied on the
handout. You must find and correct the errors without
completely rewriting the sentence or changing
the tense. You will have about 7-10 sentences.
2. You should also be familiar with the tenses,
in particular (1)the present perfect tense (which requires
the words "have" or "has" added to the past participle
of the verb--such as "they have called" or "he has
stolen" or "the window has been broken"); (2) the
past perfect tense (which requires the word "had"
added to the past participle of the verb--such as
"had cooked" or "had been seen"); (3) the progressive
tenses (which require the -ing form of the verb, also
called the present participle--such as "I am ironing"
or "he was being arrested"). Check the page in the handout
which included examples of the tenses so that you can
recognize the words that are a part of the complete
verb of the sentence. If you have problems with the tenses,
visit the OWL. Google "verb tenses," and one of the web
sites will be the Purdue OWL.
