1. Complete all the exercises on the Effective Writing
handout. Next, look at the PowerPoint that contains
suggested answers to the exercises. Mark any that you
do not understand so that you can ask questions in class.
2, The PowerPoint has been sent to the students who requested
it. Several emails were returned because my computer was
unable to deliver or your computer refused it. Check with me
Monday if you requested but failed to receive the PowerPoint.
3. Your test on Effective Writing is scheduled for Wednesday,
3/04/09. Email me, call me, or come by the
office if you have any questions.

Wednesday 6 P.M. class 2/25/09

1.After you have read the previous assignment on pages
675 and 217, read the page behind Page 5. of the Effective
Writing handout entitled "Reference of Pronouns." Next,
correct the sentences at the bottom of Page 5. of the handout.
You may write the corrections directly on the handout. We will
review in class any sentences that are not clear to you.
2. Read 226 [the handout incorrectly says page 257] "Avoid Excessive
Prepositions." Next, on Page 8. of the handout, correct the
paragraph ["The chairman of the board . . . .]by following the
given directions.
3. Read textbook page 238 "Be Specific and Concrete.
4. In the textbook, read "Make Negatives Positive" on pages 227-8.
Next, read handout pages 12 and 13 on "Negatives."
5. Read textbook page 504-5 "Use Parallel Phrasing" and pages
679-680 "Faulty Parallelism. Read textbook page 688 "Apostrophe
Indicating a Contraction."
6. Most of this day's assignment is reading. We will spend next
week correcting the sentences in the handout. You must read
these pages so that you can ask questions and be able to
do the exercises. Your test over this handout will be on
Wednesday 3/04/09.

1. Complete the entire handout that contains the
doublespeak exercise.
2. Complete the extra point letter.
3. Complete pages 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 [including slang]
in the Effective Writing handout.
4. Be sure to read textbook pages 223-229, "Editing for
Conciseness." Type 7 on textbook page 225.
5. Type Exercise 10 on page 229. Type this on the same
sheet as Exercise 7.
6. On page 12 of the Study Guide for Exam I, you have
an assignment for a memo. The subject is already narrowed for
you [classroom Valentine's Day party], now write a Purpose
Statement and then brainstorm possible questions that the
students may have [what is the date, how long will it last, what
refreshments will be served, who will provide the refreshments,
do I have to bring anything,is there a cost, how much if there
is a cost, is this at the first or at the end of the period,
plus any other questions that you can think of]. Follow the
instructions on the assignment sheet [page 12]. Use the PRO
plan to develop your paragraphs.
7. Remember that your extra point letter is due NO LATER THAN
the BEGINNING OF THE CLASS [no exceptions].

Exercises. (Monday class can also get this in my office.)

will give the definition and you will write in the
correct term], The purpose statement, the types of
evidence, the Brainstorming steps, the sources of
conflict in collaborative groups [along with one or
two specific and different details for each], the items
necessary at the top of a memo,and the elements of a letter.
In addition, you will write a summary of a paragraph that I
will give you, and you will write and type a short letter.
