Due Wednesday night 10/01/08

1. In your Study Guide on page 4, Chapter 17 "Memo Reports
and Electronic Mail" should be changed to Chapter 16 "Memo
Reports and Electronic Correspondence." Please make the
changes and complete the Study Guide for the chapter
beginning on page 326.
2. In your Study Guide on page 4, Chapter 18 "Workplace
Letters" should be changed to Chapter 17 "Workplace Letters."
Please make the changes and complete the Study Guide for the
chapter beginning on page 359.
3. Read "Writing Informational Memorandums" on pages 10 and
11 of your Study Guide.

Due Monday 9/29/08 or Tuesday 9/30/08

Due Wednesday night 9/24/08

1. Learn these nine terms and definitions:
(1) Abstract--something ideal; intangible; an idea, a
principle or a standard.
(2)Concrete--can be experienced by the senses;
(3)Objective--factual; contains no personal opinion bias
or opinion.
(4)Subjective--words influenced by personal opinion or bias.
(5)Denotation--a dictionary meaning of a word
(6)Connotation--a slang meaning given to a word; an
emotional response to the slang meaning of a word.
(7)Idiom--a word or words with a diffeend meaning from
the denotation.
(8)Sensory--details which apapeal to the senses.
(9)Image--a picture created in the reader's mind, usually
by the sensory detail.
2. Remember that you have a test tonight covering the
handout on writing. We will have class after the last person
has completed the test.

Due Wednesday 9/24/08 or Thursday 9/25/08

1. In the Study Guide for Text Book Exam I, complete the
Chapter 1 "Introduction to Technical Communitations"
page.

2. On page 10, read XI. CONTRACTIONS. Correct the sentences
on the bottom of page 10 and on the top of page 11.
3. Read text pages 227-228 "Make Negatives Positive."
Read XII NEGATIVE LANGUAGE on page 11 of the handout and
complete the exercise on page 12.Complete the exercise
beginning at the bottom of page 14 and continuing on
page 15. Review all the items that we have covered
in this handout. Your test is one week from today.
4. Be prepared to ask questions regarding any items
covered on this handout.
5. The class notes on verbs and the formation of the

1. Read "Avoid Wordy Phrases" and "Eliminate Redundancy"
on page 223. Complete the exercises on "Wordiness" and
"Redundancy" on pages 4 and 5 of the handout.
2. Read "Slang" on page 5 of the handout. Type at least
four slang terms that other people may not know (do not
use any terms listed on page 5).
3. On page 6 of the handout, read "Reference of Pronouns."
Read "Avoid Ambiguous Pronoun References" on page 217.
On the handout, correct at least the seven sentences at
the bottom of page 5. Type Exercise 1, page 218. Type
this on the same page as the four slang terms.
4. Read page 226 "Avoid Excessive Prepositions." Excessive
prepositions, wordiness, and redundancy can be edited out
of sentences. For example: The mayor of the town advertised
a car of his in the section of the newspaper for classified
ads. [nineteen words]
CORRRECTED VERSION: The town mayor advertised his car in the
newspaper's classified ad section. [twelve words] Complete
the exercise on page 8 of the handout.
5. Read page 238 "Be Specific and Concrete" and type
Exercise 15 on the same page as the other typed exercises.

Voice
