1. Read "Avoid Wordy Phrases" and "Eliminate Redundancy"
on page 223. Complete the exercises on "Wordiness" and
"Redundancy" on pages 4 and 5 of the handout.
2. Read "Slang" on page 5 of the handout. Type at least
four slang terms that other people may not know (do not
use any terms listed on page 5).
3. On page 6 of the handout, read "Reference of Pronouns."
Read "Avoid Ambiguous Pronoun References" on page 217.
On the handout, correct at least the seven sentences at
the bottom of page 5. Type Exercise 1, page 218. Type
this on the same page as the four slang terms.
4. Read page 226 "Avoid Excessive Prepositions." Excessive
prepositions, wordiness, and redundancy can be edited out
of sentences. For example: The mayor of the town advertised
a car of his in the section of the newspaper for classified
ads. [nineteen words]
CORRRECTED VERSION: The town mayor advertised his car in the
newspaper's classified ad section. [twelve words] Complete
the exercise on page 8 of the handout.
5. Read page 238 "Be Specific and Concrete" and type
Exercise 15 on the same page as the other typed exercises.
