ALL CLASSES--10/03/09

1. When you type the answers to the Chapter Review questions,
be sure to type the number of the question and to begin
with a form of the question. FOR EXAMPLE: question 1. in
Chapter 7 would begin with "Writing e-mail messages and memos
is increasingly important today because organizations are
downsizing, flattening chains of command, forming work teams,
and empowering rank-and-file employees. The increasing use
of e-mails and memos makes them a primary channel for
internal communication."

Typing both question and answer allows you to use this exercise
as an important tool for studying for a test. If you type
only the answer, when you study, you won't know the question
associated with the answer.

2. Don't forget to post your answers in the drop box. I will
no longer accept printed copies without a penalty.

Due Date:

T/TH 11:00 class-Thursday, September 3, 2009, by 11:00 a.m.
W night class-Wednesday, September 2, 2009, by 6:00 p.m.

PART A: Read the following lecture:
Welcome to Technical and Business Writing on the Internet! I hope by now you feel somewhat comfortable accessing your course. If you are reading this lecture, you have already read the course syllabus and online orientation, so you should have a good idea about how this course will work.

As I explained in the online orientation material, during most weeks, under the Assignments link, I will post weekly assignments. In these assignments, I will refer you to other Homepage links. This posting of Week 2 Assignments is labeled this way because you will turn in these assignments during the second week of a 16-week semester.

PART B: Read Chapter 1, pages 1—27.

PART C: Complete the following activities, accessible from the Chapter 1 Course Content link from our Homepage.
1.1 Review Chapter 1 Learning Objectives.
1.2 View and listen to E-lecture.
1.3 Review and study Flashcards.
1.4 Complete the Chapter 1 Quiz.
1.5 Complete Career Track Spelling activity.

When you access these activities from the Course Content link, you will notice additional activities. These other activities are not required!

PART D: Upload to the D2L Drop box, answers to the following Chapter 1 Questions (Page 28).
Create a Word, rtf, or html file document, answering the Chapter 1 Review questions (1-15) listed on Page 28.

Please remember to:
1. Answer in complete sentences.
2. Double-space your entire document.
3. Use 12 point font size.
4. Use Ariel font style.
5. Include the MLA heading on the first page of your Word document. (Refer to Page 117 of your MLA Handbook for an example of this heading. The MLA Heading is NOT the heading you see at the top of your first assignment page!)

Please upload these questions/answers to the Week 2 Chapter 1 Questions folder in the dropbox.

PART E: Read and complete the following C.L.U.E. Activity:
During the semester, I will ask you to complete CLUE activities, and if you’ve reviewed your textbook, you know the answers are located in Appendix A. I strongly encourage you to keep a file or notebook with your work on these activities. You are not required to turn in answers to these activities, but you are responsible for learning CLUE material.

Complete the 10 Competent Language Usage Essentials items listed on Page 32.

Check your work.

PART F: Read and complete Section 1.13.
Once you’ve read this chapter, you will have an understanding of Workplace Ethics.

Complete the 1.13 Workplace Ethics quiz on Page 30 and then compare your answers to others’ responses on Page 31.

You are not required to send me your answers. I want you to see, on your own, how you score and then compare your answers.

PART G: Upload to the D2L dropbox folder your introductory essay.
One disadvantage in taking an Internet course is that getting to know one another is somewhat difficult. I would like for you to tell me a little about yourself. Word-process an Introductory Essay of about 350 – 450 words in length. In this essay you should cover the following topics:

Personal Information—Tell about yourself, your family, home, schools, jobs and hobbies.

Goals—Tell what your goals are for this course and for your work here at
Temple College. What skills do you hope to improve? Are you working on
a particular degree or certificate? Do you have plans to transfer?

Experiences—Tell about any positive or negative experiences you have had
with technical writing or with writing in general. What types of documents have you been required to prepare on the job?

Be sure you include any information you think I should know about you!

Structure your introductory essay so that you have at least 3 paragraphs, one covering each of the topics listed above. Use 12-point font size, Ariel font style, for this essay and all other assignments. Include a note at the end of your essay giving your word count.

Remember my advice about the completion of assignments: Don’t wait until the night before to begin any assignment.

Please upload to the Week 2 Introductory Essay folder.

PART H: Review
Assignments may seem a bit confusing at first. Please read and reread this assignment. As you can see, some parts require you to read certain information. Other parts require you to complete activities and then upload files. Here's a review:

PART A: Read the lecture. (nothing to send me or complete)

PART B: Read the assigned chapter. (nothing to send me or complete)

PART C: Complete assigned Chapter 1 activities.

PART D: Upload to the D2L dropbox Chapter 1 answers (in complete sentences).

PART E: Complete CLUE activity but do not send me the answers.

PART F: Complete Ethics activity but do not send me your answers.

PART G: Upload to the dropbox your introductory essay.

Thanks for all the work you've done so far. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to work with you this semester!
